Ala Costa Centers is pleased to announce the winners of the 3rd Annual Dennis Richmond Community Impact Award for Outstanding Teachers. Congratulations to the following teachers who demonstrated an incredible impact to their students and to the community. Thank you to everyone who nominated a deserving educator and to all the hard-working teachers for their dedication to making this world a better place through education.

The award winners will be recognized at Ala Costa Centers’ upcoming annual fundraising gala event, ‘A Taste of Mardi Gras’ on March 16th at the Shannon Center in Dublin. General Information Ala Costa Centers’ mission is to empower children to find, use, and express their unique skills and talents. The purpose of the Dennis Richmond Community Impact Award is to recognize an individual who has inspired and empowered children and youth in the community through his/her position at a public school, therefore furthering the mission of Ala Costa. The winner of the Dennis Richmond Community Impact Award, an individual who has shown exemplary work at a public school, will be awarded a fabulous prize to reward their dedication. The prestigious judges of the Dennis Richmond Community Award will be announced shortly About Dennis Richmond The award is named after a Bay Area Icon, Dennis Richmond. He retired in May 2008 after more than 40 years with the KTVU Fox Channel 2. In 1969, while working for the station as a part-time clerk-typist, Richmond won a scholarship to a special journalism program at Columbia University in New York. Upon completion, he returned to KTVU Channel 2 and covered major Bay Area stories for the next seven years. In 1976, Richmond was promoted to news anchor of "The Ten O'clock News”. During Richmond's tenure, "The Ten o’clock News" has won several Emmy awards and the Radio Television News Directors Association distinction for Best Newscast. As a long time resident of the Bay Area, Richmond has been recognized, saluted and honored by many civic organizations because of his commitment and dedication to his community. Dennis is a father and a grandfather who actively demonstrates his belief in empowering youth. He is the recipient of the Humanitarian Award - the highest award given by the City of Oakland, the Black Media Coalition Journalist of the Year Award, and is on the Board of Directors of the Child Abuse Consortium, a statewide agency. Richmond is also the past General Chairman of Alameda County's YMCA Fundraising Drive, a position he held for several years, and has served on the Oakland Mayor's Blue Ribbon Committee to Save High School Sports. Dennis Richmond was Ala Costa Centers’ first Humanitarian of the Year in 2005. He and his wife Deborah are two of Ala Costa Centers’ strongest supporters. Deborah is the President of Ala Costa’s Advisory Board and volunteers countless hours every year toward the success of Ala Costa’s programs serving children and young adults with developmental disabilities. Award Guidelines Award Purpose The purpose of the Dennis Richmond Community Impact Award is to recognize an individual who has inspired and empowered children and youth in the community through his/her position at a California public school, therefore furthering the mission of Ala Costa Centers. The winner will receive an exciting prize, will be awarded at our annual gala in front of their family and friends, and will be highlighted on Ala Costa’s website. Geographic Focus All California public schools Eligibility
- Nominees must be employed by an accredited, California IRS recognized 501(c)(1), K-12 public school.
- Nominations can be made for a teacher, coach, or administrator at California public school.
Award Nomination Process
- Award nominations are due by February 1, 2013 to be considered for the Dennis Richmond Community Impact Award. Nominations received after the due date or incomplete will be considered late and not accepted.
- Nominees can receive multiple nominations, each nomination has the opportunity to tell a different piece of the story.
- The winner will be recognized and awarded at Ala Costa’s 9th annual gala, “A Taste of Mardi Gras” on March 16, 2013 at the Shannon Center in Dublin.
- Nominations can be made for either teachers or administrators at a California public school.
- Nominations may be made through the online application only. If you require an alternate form of submittal please contact us for arrangements. Please see an example of the online application below if you wish to fill out the required fields prior to accessing online application. You will not be able to save data in the online application before submittal.
- Nominations require a $5.00 tax-deductible processing fee at the time of submission. Please follow PayPal prompts after submitting application form.
- An online confirmation notice will be sent shortly after receipt of the nomination and payment. Please contact us if you have any problems with online submittal.
