Ala Costa Centers

Programs for developmentally disabled

Ala Costa’s mission is to empower children and young adults with developmental disabilities to find, use, and express their unique skills and talents while supporting their families. In 1972, Ala Costa was started by a group of Berkeley parents who wanted a healthy alternative to institutionalizing their children with special needs. Ala Costa works closely with each student’s school, parent, therapist, and case worker in order to provide the highest level of effective support to address goals. Unlike other organizations of its kind, Ala Costa provides programs for both children and adults, providing a seamless transition of support from graduation into adulthood. This unique approach is one of the reasons Ala Costa earned the prestigious Bernie Graff Excellence Award from the Alameda County Developmental Disabilities Council.

Ala Costa Centers serves individuals with developmental disabilities such as autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, fetal alcohol syndrome, intellectual disabilities, and developmental delay. Ala Costa employees are trained on a continuous basis to work with this wide spectrum of disabilities. We have a core volunteer support that helps with program events, fundraising events, and outings. Ala Costa’s Centers are located in Oakland, Berkeley and Alameda, serving youth throughout Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.

A Letter to ACC's Family

Ala Costa needs your support. Unfortunately, Ala Costa was just informed a major donor will not be funding the organization for the next 3 years. This is a loss of over $70,000 a year ($210,000 for the 3 years). The loss of $70,000 will greatly impact quality services to children and adults served by Ala Costa Centers. As you may know, Ala Costa serves students ages 5 and older, with developmental disabilities. We offer 4 quality programs, After School Services, Adult Transition Services, Respite Services and Adult Community Training Services.
